The Battle of St. George’s Island marks the first time that the British forces recruit enslaved people to join the British army, promising them freedom.
Maryland militia repels invading British troops on St. George’s Island attempting to land on the Maryland mainland. There are a handful of other British incursions, but St. George’s is the largest Revolutionary War battle in Maryland.
The Maryland and New York Iron and Coal Company is incorporated in 1837. Within three years, two blast furnaces, a puddling furnace and a rolling mill make the Mount Savage Iron Works the largest in the US. It makes the rails for the B&O railroad.
Baltimore’s Battle monument, designed by Maximilian Godefroy, is the first stone monument and the first public war memorial in the US. In 1822 the statue of Lady Baltimore is hoisted atop the monument.
Seven Morgan State College students stage the first sit-in at Read’s Drugstore in Baltimore in 1955. It ends peacefully and occurs 5 years prior to more famous Greensboro, NC sit-in.
