Charles Carroll and William Paca, two wealthy Maryland aristocrats, put their lives on the line by voting to sign the Declaration of Independence. They are both personally pursued by the British during the War. Charles Carroll is the only Catholic signer of the Declaration. The other signers are Samuel Chase and Thomas Stone.
Jewish men gain rights of citizenship
“Jew Bill” legislation is passed by the Maryland Assembly in 1826, giving Jewish men all the rights of citizenship equal to Christians. Thomas Kennedy of Hagerstown is the tireless sponsor.
